Imagine you are in an augmented reality where you can discover and add virtual stuff through your phone-that’s OUTTA. OUTTA is a social AR app that allows the user to scavenger hunt, create, and share virtual spaces publicly and privately. Download the OUTTA app

WHAT CAN WE DO IN AR/VR?
Since Facebook acquired Oculus, AR/VR has been the trendiest topic in the tech industry. With the knowledge that AR/VR technology is still years away from the hardware catching up to the general public, and that most efforts have been put into movies and gaming, my team and I wanted to do something different while using the technology that is readily available to consumers.
Out of nine feasible product ideas our first product is OUTTA, which is an iOS app that lets you discover virtual spaces within your physical world. When OUTTA detects virtual spaces generated by other users, point the camera to match the key image shot by the user who created it, then OUTTA would unlock the virtual space right in your phone. It might be a secret message, a cool mural, a store coupon, music from Spotify, or a game you can play with another user. Upon entering a virtual space the user can make changes to the space, leave comments, riff, forward spaces to friends, and ‘like’ the space. Every space is its own community where users can build together, so it is unique and has a life of its own.
THEN THE PROJECT VIRTUALLY BEGAN
- CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
Documentation on app brainstorming, and this particular board were sketched later in the process to set the hierarchy to prioritize the app features.
- PAPER PROTOTYPE & USER TESTING
This app was difficult to present as a paper prototype since it requires an iOS camera to be turned on while virtual objects to be placed on the top of live view. To give the user an “immersive” experience, I used drafting paper whenever the camera is turned on.
- UI MOODBOAD
I created three moodboards inspired by the main features of OUTTA. The first theme “Build Together” is based off the sense of community and the goal that users will build spaces and make it awesome together. My plan is to utilize elements from boy scout badges and board games. The second theme is “Friendship,” inspired by the heart-warming and surprising feeling when users receive gifts and discover messages specially made for them. The third theme and chosen moodboard is “Sticker Fun,” it’s inspired by the excitement of decorating a space, like tagging and putting cool things inside a space. The look and feel is young, vibrant, and uses lots of illustrations.
PROTOTYPE FOR CONCEPT VALIDATION
To propose our concept to the upper managers, I made a quick prototype to show the interaction and the social feed of the app. User flow: A geo-location lock screen notification is triggered when the user is nearby an OUTTA space. The user goes to the location, the OUTTA space opens, and the user reads and replies to the virtual message.
