Torn is an oversized poetry book inspired by the 1991 Chinese movie, "Raise the Red Lantern". The movie portrays the tragic life of a westernized Chinese woman, forced into marrying into a traditional Chinese family as the 4th concubine. Torn by strict old-world barriers and her newfound self identity, her sorrowful survival only led her to a deeper doom. An attempt to portray her trapped life and utter sadness, the book was made with blood-color threads in Chinese stitch-binding technique, and dark textured cover and oversize print. Design and typography is dark, gloomy, and overlaps on top of each other.
